A nanny, a child minder, nursery… Every choice has its pros and cons. Only you can decide which option best suits your baby and your household. To help you choose, here are a few things to take into consideration:

A babysitter in your home

Pros

  • Relatively flexible hours.
  • You choose the person.

Cons

  • High cost
  • You are highly dependent on one person (what happens if your babysitter is ill).
  • Difficult to find and rare in Singapore

Infant care or childcare centre

 Pros

  • Your baby will learn to mix with other children starting at a young age.
  • Your baby is cared for by professionals.
  • Reasonable cost and can be subsidised heavily

 Cons

  • Difficult to secure a place especially at location of choice or preference
  • Nurseries send children home when they are ill.
  • Less flexible hours

Confinement nanny

Pros

  • Provides personalised support for mother and newborn.
  • Can help with feeding, night care and confinement meals.
  • Gives parents time to rest and recover.

Cons

  • Can be expensive and more so especially through an agency
  • Moms instead have to be heavily reliant of recommendations with uncertainty 
  • Usually provides short-term support rather than ongoing childcare.
  • Hiring an eligible nanny will require confinement nanny work permit through Ministry of Manpower
